Good morning. This officially marks exactly one year since I sent out the first Rules of Thumb newsletter. Like I said last week, thank you for being along for the ride. I'm so excited for the next year and wherever it takes us.
In other news, the Super Bowl is tomorrow. This week, I was informed of the Super Bowl logo conspiracy theory for the first time. How many of you are aware of this?
If it's true, I suppose the Eagles are bound to win this year. Sure does take some of the fun out of it :).

☝️ First Hand
When MLB superstar Mike Trout's season was derailed by a tiny bone in his wrist, it highlighted a career-altering injury that's common in certain sports. This seemingly insignificant fracture, barely visible on standard X-rays, has the power to sideline athletes at every level — from weekend warriors to professional players.
What's most concerning isn't just the injury itself, but how easily it's missed and the permanent damage that can result from delayed treatment. Whether you're a baseball player, golfer, or hockey enthusiast, understanding this injury could save you months of frustration and potentially your athletic career.

👀 X-ray of the Week 👀
It's a lot to go through to have a hip replacement. Months to years of pain before, physical therapy, injections...and then eventually the surgery itself and all the rehab thereafter.
But it's even more to go through if you shatter your hip around a previous hip replacement you've had for years...ouch.

🙋 Raise your hand if you're: Anyone On This Planet 🙋
Potentially huge news in the medical world this week that somehow flew way under the radar.
For the first time since the 1980s, there is a NEW form of pain medication available...that isn't a narcotic.
Look out for an upcoming deep dive I'm going to do on this medicine, but it's called suzetrigine, and it functions as a sodium channel blocker. Specifically, it blocks the sodium channels found in nerves that transmit pain signals to the brain.
In human trials, it is almost as effective as opioid pain medications...with none of the addiction problems or other nasty side effects. Plus, it seems safe thus far to combine with either ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Honestly, if this pans out, I might not ever need to prescribe another narcotic again. Hallelujah!
