Good morning. I don't know about you, but this is one of my favorite weeks of the year. The week when the first of our daffodils bloom. Bring on spring, summer, and all the warm weather fun that is bound to follow!

FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE
What's putting you at risk for your next injury?
While most of us would like to think injuries are just random bad luck, years of treating injuries have taught me a few clear patterns behind musculoskeletal pain. What if you could identify these patterns before they lead to injury? From the seemingly harmless act of wrestling your toddler into pajamas to the weekend warrior syndrome so many fall victim to, most orthopedic problems stem from four fundamental causes. Understanding these root causes isn't just about treatment — it's about prevention, and potentially saving yourself from months of recovery or even surgery.

X-RAY OF THE WEEK
Soccer on wet fields might...hurt
This is the orthopedic version of those beautiful before and after tummy tuck or facelift photos you might come across. But as you can see...these are WAY more beautiful. 😉 What you see on the left is what's called an open (yes, the bone's hanging out of the skin) ankle fracture-dislocation. This unfortunate gentleman slipped on a sheet of black ice while walking his dog. What you see on the right is the x-ray taken just after I slipped the bone back inside the skin with the backend of a scalpel, re-set (in orthopedic language we say 'reduced') the bones, and then molded a plaster splint to hold the bones in place. See how well those fractured bones and the ankle joint line up again? Mmmm. Chef's kiss. (This patient went on to have surgery later in the day to put a plate and screws on both sides of the ankle. Fortunately, he did not get a bone infection and did quite well.)

I don't fully understand the science behind this new form of matter Microsoft is touting; but I do understand the pain behind Teams' at-times mind-boggling struggles...

🩸 FINGER ON THE PULSE
Like a sore thumb
This week, I thought we'd do a little orthopedic-related trivia. Have you ever wondered where the phrase "stick out like a sore thumb" came from?
I'll admit, this story was not exactly the origin I expected!
